In today's Google PR competition everyone are completely focusing in getting inbound links to their sites. While you are focusing on getting more sites to link to yours, you must not also forget about the polar opposites.
If you have outbound links to the site it is like voting for the site you are linking. This is also a part of the ranking algorithms process. The main idea behind this concept is that if you two site have same design and content, then the search engine weights them according to the links pointing to them.
So why should you like to keep out other sites. Generally speaking if you carefully link to other relevant sites then you are improving the relevancy on the site.
Let us consider that you have a pizza shop and you are located somewhere in UK. Then you have a typical site that tells the pizza types, store location, hours and coupons. Then you are also a person who knows the importance of outbound linking. So for this reason you are going to link to 10 sites.
Now think yourself as a search engine spider. Then when you navigate through the site you will determine that the site is about pizza. When you find the resource page you will come across some well know links. Seeing this and being a search engine spider you will be happy and leave the site. With all this the spider will comes to a conclusion that the site is about pizza and it has related contents and links to the major sites.
Seeing all the relevant information the spider will return to the database with the necessary information that has to be processed in the algorithms. The spider will pre-sort the links that points to your site in the search results.
The other benefit that you can get from outbound linking is Geo Targeting also called as local search. Now there is a lot of gossip that the next big trend in the search marketing is the local search. But the only thing that can be said is that it will not affect the physical address listed in the website for those who will be interested in the local searches.
As an experiment I build a website with a very unique URL and the site contained only one page. The only thing I did is to make the site to contain more than 70 outbound links relevant to the search engine optimization industry, SEO forums, SEO tools and some SEO tutorials. So when the first page rank update was done to the site it came to be 3.
I did the experiment to see how the outbound links have their effect in the ranks of the website. With only the outbound links I was able to generate page rank 2 in the competition of the Search engine optimization industry. So it is advisable to take some time to find the relevant site to link and enjoy the power of outbound links easily.
