Search Engine Optimization : Boost your page rank

Author: Shaun Smith

Our next few posts will dispel a number of SEO myths that have been plaguing our efforts to teach and educate America to have a transparent and clear understanding of what SEO is really all about. Additionally, let me also take a moment to encourage you to pick up the phone, and ask one of our search engine optimization experts about anything here, or anything else you might have heard regarding search engine optimization.

  • Trading links in massive fashion helps boost Page Rank and your overall rankings on Google and the major engines

Its funny, but in my opinion, building an enormous reciprocal link network (which for some reason has been adopted by many as the end all search engine optimization strategy) is at best, a huge waste of time. Worse yet, if it's not a best case scenario, the worst case is that you're violently penalized by Google and the like for doing things the wrong way. Generally speaking, reciprocal links aren't completely and utterly worthless, but as Google has become much more sophisticated with respect to analyzing them, they sit pretty low on the totem pole. There are of course exceptions, but I wouldn't expect miracles with respect to a ‘quick fix'. Search engine optimization and web design tactics need to properly utilize the fundamental principles and rules that have been put forth by the engines. For example, links should be in related topics or industries to help you rank better. Additionally, you get an extra point for an ‘anchor texted' link versus one that simply says ‘click here'. You're far better off having the link that rather says ‘Los Angeles Mortgage Rates'. The problem is that there are millions of link farms who want to provide the quick fix, when in reality; SEO isn't a one-time payment, quick fix kind of project. It's something that needs to be worked at, takes time, and if done correctly, can generate a big return. We suggest you always steer clear of link farms and link exchanges. I wouldn't turn my nose up to a relevant reciprocal link from a trusted site, but my preference would be for a one-way link from that trusted site. Further, if you need a link building campaign, there's nothing wrong with one that will help the process along, but make sure the company you use is aware of the rules. Our search engine optimization experts can tailor a campaign that will effectively help you improve rank, increase your links, while not leaving you open to a costly penalty.

  • Linking out (to big boys like Google.com and the like) helps your overall rankings and position

In my experience, the benefit of an external-pointing link is basically irrelevant to ranking and position. There is a major caveat to this rule, which is we're assuming this is a normal link neighborhood without anything crazy going on. Since the internet is typically made from crazy, we feel it's important to note. Now, on the other hand, if you're hoarding your link juice, or linking out solely to low quality sites, or your site's nothing but broken links, then by all means correct that with some quality outbound links and we're confident you'll see an uplifting traffic rank. There have been many behavioral tests done on outbound links, and some do believe that it does have some effect on rankings. Of course, even in the cases where people advocate outbound linking campaigns, it's certainly not recommended to partake in link hoarding, and we prefers to suggest that you link out to sites with equal or higher mozRank. Because of the specifics involved, and the ease to which you can over do it, or link to sites with lower mozRanks, you should speak with a search engine optimization expert to properly implement the strategy if you think it's something that may be useful, or if you're possibly running out of other SEO tactics to add to your already thoroughly optimized page.
